A Foundation Built for Success
The Country School's PreS-8th Grade educational model creates a unique advantage when students begin their secondary school journey. Our extended elementary experience allows students to develop deeper academic foundations, stronger character, and more refined leadership skills before entering high school. Through our five Signature Programs: Elmore Leadership, Public Speaking, STEAM, Outdoor Education, and Global Citizenship, students build the competencies and confidence that secondary school admission officers seek.
By 8th Grade, Country School students have years of public speaking experience, collaborative problem-solving through STEAM challenges, and leadership opportunities that distinguish them in the competitive secondary school admission landscape. This comprehensive preparation, combined with our small class sizes and individualized attention, ensures students are academically, socially, and emotionally ready for their next chapter.
Personalized Guidance Every Step of the Way
The Country School's secondary school counseling program is designed around one fundamental principle: helping each 8th Grader find a school that fits their individual strengths, learning style, and developmental stage. Our dedicated Secondary School Counselors, Jason Wainio and Stephanie Johnson, bring expert knowledge of educational options ranging from public schools to competitive boarding and independent school programs.
"We encourage all 8th Grade families to meet with us early in the process," shares Stephanie Johnsons. "We're happy to meet virtually, by phone, or in person based on your preference." This accessibility and flexibility reflect The Country School's commitment to partnering with families throughout the entire admission journey.
Comprehensive Support Services
Our secondary school counseling program provides extensive support that extends far beyond basic college preparatory guidance:
Individual School Matching: Counselors work one-on-one with families to identify schools that align with each student's unique profile, interests, and goals whether they're considering local public schools, Connecticut independent day schools, or boarding school opportunities across the country.
Mock Interview Preparation: Students participate in practice interviews with experienced faculty, building confidence and polish before meeting with admission officers. These sessions help students articulate their strengths, interests, and aspirations authentically.
Application Management: From coordinating standardized test preparation and SSAT administration to preparing professional recommendation letters and comprehensive student profiles, our counselors manage the logistical complexities while families focus on finding the right fit.
Graded Writing Support: Understanding that many secondary schools require graded essays, our 8th Grade English and History teachers integrate this requirement into regular curriculum, providing detailed feedback.
Building Connections Through The Secondary School Fair
Each April, The Country School hosts an annual Secondary School Fair, welcoming admission representatives from diverse educational institutions including independent day schools, parochial schools, and prestigious boarding programs. This annual event creates invaluable face-to-face connections between families and schools.
The Secondary School Fair provides students and families the opportunity to explore multiple educational pathways, ask questions directly of admission officers, and gather information efficiently in one convenient location. Open to both current Country School families and community members navigating the secondary school admission process, the fair exemplifies our commitment to supporting families beyond our own campus.
This year's Secondary School Fair takes place on April 23. Whether you're a current 7th or 8th Grade family beginning the exploration process or a community member seeking guidance on high school placement options, we invite you to join us for this free event.
A Track Record of Successful Placements
The proof of our secondary school counseling program's effectiveness lies in our graduates' placements. Country School students matriculate to an impressive range of educational institutions, from top-tier New England boarding schools to specialized magnet programs, competitive independent day schools, and excellent public school systems. Our counselors' deep relationships with admission offices, combined with their understanding of each student's unique profile, result in matches that support continued growth and success.

“Navigating the secondary school process can be complicated, but we take great pride in helping all families, whether their child hopes to matriculate to public, private, parochial, or boarding school,” says Jason Wainio. “Every child is different. Every journey is different. We are the guides who make the journey an enjoyable one.”
The secondary school admission process doesn't have to be stressful. With The Country School's expert guidance, comprehensive support services, and commitment to individualized attention, families can navigate this transition with confidence and clarity.
