Intermediate (Grades 4-5)

Intermediate Grades: 4th and 5th Grade in Madison, CT

The Country School’s Intermediate program serves students in 4th and 5th Grade in Madison, Connecticut. These upper elementary years are a bridge between the Primary grades and Middle School. Students take on more academic work, more independence, and more responsibility, and they learn time management, self-advocacy, and leadership along the way.

What Makes Our Intermediate Program Different

  • Leadership students practice every week. At the start of the school year, 5th Graders run the weekly Lower School meeting as a live radio show called WTCS. Later in the year, 4th Graders take over. Students write, host, and speak in front of their peers.
  • Academic growth. Students add French, work in math groups, and study theater.
  • Elevated traditions. Fifth Graders take part in the Etiquette Luncheon, go on outdoor education trips, and recite MacLane Poetry with Middle School students.
  • Real responsibility. Fourth Graders run the school’s recycling program. Fifth Graders tend the kitchen garden. Both grades take part in sustainability efforts across campus.
  • Longer days, more options. Homework Haven and Robotics begin in the Intermediate grades.
  • Small classes. Our student-teacher ratio is 7:1, so teachers know each student well.
  • Outdoor Education.  Fouth and fifth Graders share outdoor education activities in the fall. In the spring, 4th Graders spend a night in an on-campus “tent in,” and in the fall 5th Graders take their first official Outdoor Education overnight trip off campus.

Academics in 4th and 5th Grade

Intermediate students build on the foundation of the Primary Years with more complex work in:

Students learn to manage assignments, plan ahead, and ask for help when they need it. These habits prepare them for the demands of Middle School.

    I love The Country School because all the teachers and students are really friendly and helpful. The teachers are always willing to give you extra help or help you catch up with your homework or school work. You have more one-on-one time with your teachers and you get to call and/or email them if you have any questions or do not understand something.
