Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Middle School: 6th through 8th Grade in Madison, CT

The Country School’s Middle School serves students in 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade in Madison, Connecticut. It is the final division of our PreS–8 independent school. Students take on rigorous academics, make real choices about what they learn, and lead the school community. By 8th Grade, they are ready for high school.

Rigorous Academics

What Makes Our Middle School Different

  • Rigorous academics. Every student takes at least five core academic classes, including a world language.
  • Choice-based learning. Students choose electives and clubs and work on hands-on, project-based learning.
  • High school readiness. Students build time management skills and learn responsible technology use.
  • Secondary school counseling. Students and families receive guidance through the high school search and application process.
  • Leadership. Eighth Graders serve as leaders at the school, and Middle School students serve as reading buddies for younger students.
  • Athletics and the arts. About 90 percent of students play interscholastic sports. Every student can take part in the Middle School musical.
  • Small classes. Our student-teacher ratio is 7:1, so teachers know each student well.

Rigorous Academics

Middle School students take a minimum of five core academic classes:
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • History
  • Science
  • World language: Spanish, French, and/or Latin
In 7th Grade, many students add Latin. The curriculum is demanding and broad, and teachers adapt instruction to reach a wide range of learners.

Choice-Based and Project-Based Learning

Students take an active role in their own learning. They choose electives and clubs that match their interests, and they work on hands-on projects inside and outside the classroom. Additional programs include:

High School Readiness and Secondary School Counseling

Middle School prepares students for the independence of high school. Students learn to
  • Manage their time and workload.
  • Use technology responsibly.
  • Advocate for themselves.
Our secondary school counseling program guides students and families through the high school search, from choosing schools to completing applications. Our graduates attend a range of schools: day, boarding, public, and parochial.

Athletics and the Arts

About 90 percent of Middle School students play on an interscholastic athletic team each year.

  • Chorus and Chamber Chorus
  • Band
  • The Middle School musical
  • Auditioned choral and instrumental recitals

Leadership and Community

Middle School students are leaders across the school. They serve as reading buddies for younger students, and 8th Graders take on leadership roles for the whole community. Students have also attended the statewide Diversity Leadership Conference.

Clubs and Social Life

Students join clubs and teams including Robotics and Model UN. Middle School social events, including dances and the Snowflake Ball, give students time to build friendships across grades.
