CCJTC Youth Meet

In Bloomfield, Connecticut yesterday, in front of cheering parents and teammates, two young members of the cross country team ran their first official races, coming away with podium medals, while veteran Country School runners continued their strong performances and winning ways.

Competing in the 7&8 year old boys race, newcomer Harper M. took first place, with steady pacing over the 2K course, punctuated by an impressive final sprint to the finish line.

Under ideal weather conditions over the 2K tract, Lexie K. nabbed the 7&8 yr old silver medal in her first cross country race, building on the age group success she has enjoyed for the last two years in track races.

All American Liv K. next toed the starting line and, after two hilly loops of Bloomfield High School‘s athletic fields, lead all the boys and girls across the finish line in the 9&10 year old 3K division.

The 11&12 year old 3K race was next and, shaking off their camping fatigue, The Country School girls performed with their typical gritty success. All American Laila Goodman beat all the boys and girls to take first place, followed by Maribel Smith in third place, Anna Gunderson in fifth place, and Maybe Hladky in sixth place.

With the tall grass slow but his legs fast, Luke Schupp took charge of the 13&14-year-old race right from the start, grabbing gold medal for his stalwart efforts over the 4 km grass course.

Luke was part of a small Country School contingent competing last weekend in the Wilton Invitational. Luke won that race, as well, blistering the 1.5 mile course against sixth, seventh and eighth grade Connecticut runners.

Friends, teammates and fellow All Americans, Tillie Killam and Laila Goodman took second place and first place, respectively, in the girls middle race at the Wilton Invitational. In a tight pack of four throughout much of the 1.5 mile race, Laila and Tillie eventually surged away from two impressive New Canaan racers, sprinting across the finish line to the admiration of many coaches, parents and competitors.

The full team competes this Thursday on their home course against Williams School.
