Had Charlotte Lee, TCS’ new goalie, known that TCS was going to dominate Foote’s territory in Thursday’s game, she might have been able to relax in her job as goalkeeper. Thoughtful, skilled defensive plays by Lillian Claire and Claire Rogers, helped protect this special territory. Throughout the game, TCS’ offense dominated Foote’s territory and they did not like it. Even with aggressive maneuvers by the opposition, goals were scored. Halfway through the first half, Caitlin Stanat made a textbook pass to Veronica Schmid, lighting the scoreboard up with a 1-0 lead. Closing out the first half, the second goal was all Quinn Freeman.
You’d think after a little rest, Country would be scoring as soon as they entered the field in the second half, but Foote was ready for a fight. After thirteen minutes of battle and six attempts on goal, Veronica made a pass to Caitlin that secured goal number three for the Owls. If that wasn’t exciting enough, with two seconds left in the game, Caitlin made a single side shot on the goal, ending the game at 4-0.
With our 8th graders camping and canoeing along the Connecticut River, the 5th-7th grade soccer players gave their best against the fierce IDS soccer team. Tending goal, with 8 solid saves was William Pappas. Notable defensive plays were made by Jace Coassin, Oliver Milligan, Matthew Perrotti, Thoedora Kontomerkos, and Katharine Lee. Offensively, our team came out swinging in the first half. Zachary Vetrano scored 3 goals with assists by Oliver Milligan, Jace Coassin, and Caitlin Stanat. In the second half, Claire MacKay scored the 4th goal, with IDS trailing behind her. Unfortunately, our lead of 4-3 was surpassed with only 6 minutes remaining in the game. In those final minutes, the score was tied and with only 3 minutes left, nearly doubled. We cannot be disappointed though. Today was the first game for many of our fifth and sixth graders alike. Playing time was had by all and a sense of team and community was established. As coaches, we were proud of the leadership our 7th graders took on and look forward to our next games ahead.
