"The Country School’s athletes all came away with promising performances."

The annual McGee Invitational race is not named for our beloved Bob McGee but it is just as special: McGee organizes the six races by gender and by grade level, so the runners race only students their age rather than younger students competing with seventh and eighth graders.

The Country School’s athletes all came away with promising performances. Luke S., in the 6th grade boys race, took second overall out of 43 runners from across Connecticut, nabbing a tall trophy and his fastest race so far this season.

Because our 5th grade team blends into 6th grade for Middle School athletics, our 5th graders ran in the 6th grade girls race. Laila G. lead the way, winning by a huge 35 seconds over 2nd place. Her teammate, Anna V., now an eighth grader, won the same 6th grade race two years ago.

Maribel S. had another breakout performance, astonishing everyone but herself by finishing 3rd out of the 55 runners and recording her fastest pace yet this season while walking away with a hard-earned trophy.

Anna G. scampered over the 1.7 miles of trails, roads and paths to grab 14th place and a medal in another strong time. Maybe H. in 18th and Samantha S. in 36th rounded out the top five scoring for their team, running up Happy Mountain and then flowing down the other side to race back to the tent for their snacks. Maybe grabbed a medal for her exertion.

Eighth graders Miklosh F. and Liam B. waited all morning to run their 2.3 miles in humid, hot weather. Racing together for much of the race, the duo ground hard through the final loop around a pond to finish with inspiring sprints on the turf field, in McGee Stadium. Competing in the largest race of the day, Liam took 21st place out of the 71 runners, while Miklosh took 18th place, earning a medal for his tenacity.

And finally, eighth grade standout Anna V., who won the 6th grade race two years ago, won the 8th grade race handily, running the fastest female times of any Connecticut 7th or 8th grader over the 2.3 miles, earning a trophy a plaque, and a smile.

After workouts Sunday and Tuesday, the teams race in the Independent Day School Invitational on Wednesday.
