Coed Soccer Defeats Williams Boys with a Last Second Goal!

We were met with some pretty tough offensive players on the Williams team, and our defense was really put to the test. Thankfully, they all rose to the occasion. Charlie, Kyle, Lucy, and Maria started the game on defense and played aggressively against some much larger players. Charlie especially played impressively, clearing every ball in sight. Although Sadie, Lily, and Maddie were slightly intimidated by some rather large 8th graders to start, they did what their coach asked and gave it a try. They showed true teamwork and grit when they got out there. When Lucy and Maria left early, we had to switch things up and be a bit more creative. Quinn stepped in at center defense and played her heart out, as per usual. And then towards the end of the second half, Caitlin was incredibly vital as a sweeper. Had Caitlin not been in that position towards the end of the game, we most likely would have lost. She saved so many potential straightaways and goals.
And speaking of saving goals… Sam was absolutely incredible in goal. He was a total rockstar! He dove, slid, and leapt to stop some of the toughest shots we’ve seen all season. You could hear Coach Gunther yelling “Sam, you’re my hero” after one of his more impressive saves.
On offense, Veronica headed a ball into the goal, which is very rare and SO exciting for us coaches to see. Emily scored a goal that didn’t count, but it was an incredible shot nonetheless. Oliver played both midfield and striker, and it may have been his best game yet! He scored the tie-breaking goal with only 20 seconds left, and made the sidelines go completely wild. Norah also played most of the game in midfield and was running around the entire field, stepping in when needed, which was great to see!
What a day. We can’t wait to see what this group does next! We are all so proud of you!
