Killam Sisters Shine at Rhino Run Invitational

WATERTOWN, CT — The hills were steep, the grass was soft, and the competition was fierce on Wednesday, September 17, as more than 200 middle school runners gathered at Taft School for the annual Rhino Run Invitational. The prize: coveted T-shirts awarded to the top ten boys and top ten girls. Seventh-grader Liv Killam wasted no time in asserting herself among the leaders. Trading positions with three different challengers, she attacked the final downhill and stormed into the last 600 meters with a decisive move. From there, she powered away, lengthening her lead with every stride and breaking the tape in 13:10 as the day’s dominant champion. Not to be outdone, fifth-grader Lexie Killam started more conservatively, sitting in 19th place early on. With determination and grit, she picked off older runners one by one, working her way into the top ten. In dramatic fashion, she was tripped within sight of the finish line, but popped back up—bloody, unbowed, and cheered on by the crowd—to cross in ninth place and claim her well-earned T-shirt. The Taft trainer was quick to patch her up, but nothing could wipe away the smile of triumph. Under a brilliant September sun, with turning leaves and roaring spectators, the Killam sisters made their mark on the Rhino Run, showing that Country School’s runners can compete with the best.
