Young Owls Impress High School Opponents and Fans Despite the Loss

Coach McDonough
As Coach McDonough and Coach Adkins walked off the field at the end of Thursday’s game against Foote, the two of them smiled at each other and high fived. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had during a big loss,” McDonough said. “Totally,” agreed Adkins. “I am just so proud of these kids.”

And that is the truth of it. This group of brave and bold teammates didn’t let the size and speed of their opponents deter them from giving 100% and staying positive throughout the game.

Sure, there were literal high schoolers on the Foote Squad (the 8-man team was made up of four 9th graders and four 7th graders), but TCS didn’t give an inch when it came to facing off against the bigger opponents. And it was the fans who noticed. So many of the spectators--parents, grandparents, students, faculty--simply glowed when discussing how well the 5th and 6th graders had played against much bigger foes.

Even the Foote coaches were left dumbfounded, but  it wasn’t just the playing that impressed them. Of course, that was the case when one Foote coach raised his eyebrows when the score was 5-6 and said, “Oh my goodness, we are graduating our four best kids…I am terrified about playing you guys for the next three years with this group!” The other coach noted how disciplined our team was in their passes and their sharing of the frisbee with everyone on the team. "They seem like they just love the game...and each other."

For the TCS coaches, they couldn't agree more, and it was the positivity and focus, despite the scoring margin, that was most everlasting in the story of the game. To find joy in a loss, to compete fully and wholeheartedly, celebrating even when the final result was already decided…that is what The Country School is all about.

Kudos to this group of kids. Whether they scored or passed, or knocked down many a pass, everyone’s fingerprints were all over this game!

Particular shout outs go to Harper who ended the game with two assists; Emily who had two assists and two scores of her own; Sam C and Gideon who both scored; and Ben who notched his first scoring point of the year on a nifty assist from Emma!

Congratulations to the entire team who gets their next chance at a win on Wednesday versus OLM Prep at 3:30 in downtown Madison.
