JV Owls Sharpen Talons in Season Opener

Coach McDonough
Interestingly, the origins of the frisbee are unclear: there are a handful of colleges that lay claim to the act of tossing pie tins around their campus greens which, I mean, makes sense given the youthful propensity to want to run around and be playful when you’re 19 years old and have well-stretched hamstrings. What is clear, however, is that it was the shallow metal pins of William Russell Frisbie’s Frisbie Pie Company (founded in Bridgeport in 1871) that were being tossed about. Just Connecticut kids eating pie and running around in a field.

As I watched our team of nineteen athletes sprint about in a sunny field in Stonington today, I was reminded how beautifully easy it is for children to find joy. In the grand scheme of all that is facing the world right now, chasing around a plastic disc and cheering for one another might feel trivial, but as the poet Kaveh Akbar notes, “...some say what feels like joy is often joy.”

And so it was that joy–real, tangible joy!-- was sought this afternoon as the Country School Owls sharpened their talons in a stunning effort that upended the Pine Point Panthers by a score of 15-4. Yet even the Panthers had smiles on their faces at the end which represents one of the real joys of the game of ultimate. Established in 1966 by a bunch of high school students in New Jersey who hoped to celebrate teamwork through the “spirit of the game,” the sport is noted for its lack of referees, emphasis on sportsmanship, and fun-loving spirit. Fun can be had by all.

While there were many highlights today, the real magic was in the way teammates supported teammates when they didn’t make great plays, when they fumbled frisbees and flopped about. This is a sport that celebrates novices and that finds joy in the truth that very few people consider ultimate to be their #1 sport.

We are so very proud of this group and look forward to practice from 2:30-3:15 tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the team today in Stonington.
