Players have worked really hard in practice, focusing on footwork and passing drills, while learning some new offensive plays rooted in give-and-go strategies as well as several new defenses and press breaks. And, as we know, practice pays off! The team has gone 3-0 over the past two weeks behind some very impressive offensive outputs and strong rebounding and defensive efforts.
Last Tuesday, February 8th, we hosted Pine Point and were able to make up for an early season loss to them, winning 38-28 behind Emily D’s 22 point effort and Evelyn R’s and Rosie L’s 8 and 6 points respectively. Laila, Anna (who also added a bucket), Mia S, Chloe N and Mia N played terrific defense and grabbed key rebounds. The turning point of the game came when the team, with guidance from Coach Johnson, shifted the defense from person to person to the “triangle and two,” which allowed the players to contain their two excellent shooters.
The next day, February 9th, the team traveled to New Haven to take on the Foote School. Walking into the gym, we were greeted by an opposing team of 22 7th and 8th grade players, which felt understandably daunting. However, the girls stuck to the game plan, with Lara O, Theodora K, Mia S, Nora H and Anna G playing strong defense and Rosie L (10 pts), Emily D (6 pts) and Anna G (2 pts) leading the way offensively. We won the exciting game 18-16, and needless to say, it was a fun van ride back to TCS!
And yesterday, the team showed terrific flexibility and dedication, passing up opportunities for fun, end-of-day class Valentine’s Day celebrations to leave early for an away game at IDS, originally scheduled for home. It was worth the sacrifice as the team came out victorious 32-24! Emily D (18 pts) had another breakout game offensively, and Evelyn R (8 pts), Mia S (2 pts), Anna G (2 pts) and Laila G (2 pts) rounded out the scoring for the Owls. Laila G deserves a huge shout out for shutting down the opponents leading scorer with her smart, tenacious defense, along with Nora and Emma L who came off the bench to make key steals and snag several critical rebounds. As we know, in basketball, great defense leads to valuable offensive opportunities!
The team next faces Hopkins at home tomorrow, Wednesday, February 16th. Per today’s announcement, we look forward to welcoming spectators! Come cheer on the team!
