Country School Raises Funds in the Run for Refugees

With fresh snow still falling on Sunday morning, over 25 Country School community members participated--both virtually and in person on the streets of New Haven--in the Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services (IRIS) Run for Refugees 5k race. The event, which is equal parts awareness raiser and fundraiser, collected over $90,000 for the organization. 

 

The Country School, itself, raised $1,692 with donations coming from members all throughout the community.

 

The Country School’s relationship with IRIS runs deep as many faculty and staff have volunteered or worked at the organization in the past, and Country School partnered with the South East Connecticut World Affairs Council (SECWAC) to welcome IRIS Executive Director Chris George to campus. During his time on campus, Mr. George addressed an in-person and virtual audience to discuss the recent arrival of thousands of Afghani families seeking refuge on American air force bases around the country; he was introduced by 5th Grade students who had recently completed a study of Refugees and read Alan Gratz’s book, Refugee and a 7th Grade IDEA Student Alliance member provided the closing remarks.
