Country School Robotics Team “Archimedes' Aces” Top Finisher in States

The team took 7th Place in the State Finals.
The Archimedes' Aces, led by 8th Grade captains Anya Zigmont of Durham and Milo Burch of Madison, ended their season on a high note at the State Finals, finishing 7th in the state overall and 2nd for school-based, school-coached teams, setting a Country School "PR" in the process. The team is proudly coached by longtime science and STEAM teacher and finalist for the Connecticut Technology Council’s Women of Innovation Stephanie Johnson. New to The Country School, Director of Technology Joseph LaMacchia, jumped eagerly at the opportunity to co-coach an official robotics team with Johnson.

STEAM is a Country School Signature Program that begins as early as PreSchool. Through STEAM units, after-school offerings and summer camps, the curious and dedicated members of the Archimedes Aces have actually been preparing for this competition for years.

Luca Coletti of Madison, Austin Holway of Guilford, Chloe Nelson of Branford, brothers Alexander and Nathaniel Schultz of Guilford, and Christopher Yuh are active members of the team, supporting each other through the very challenging work of the First Lego League season.

With the regional qualifier scheduled for the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Archimedes Aces demonstrated their commitment to their team. Brothers Will and Keenan Bonito of Madison, Spencer Mackenzie of Guilford, Whitman Liu of Wallingford, Henry Ogeneski of Guilford, and Braden Rinehart of Guilford built attachments, helped with voiceovers and animations, and made project models, even when they knew they couldn't be present for the culminating competitions. Representing the team at Regionals, Alex Monin of Branford, Michael DeFlippo of Durham, and James Wang of Guilford were instrumental in helping the judges understand their top prize robot design, strategy, and project.

Throughout the entire season, the hardworking team members modeled the school’s Signature Programs of STEAM and Public Speaking through their creativity, inventiveness, and confidence, skills that will serve them well both in and out of the classroom.
