An Undefeated Season for Boys Varsity Soccer!

Hamden Hall 2-1 (6-0-0)

It was a brisk and breezy day as the Owls took the field to play a soccer match against Hamden Hall.  With an undefeated season on the line, the varsity boys’ team would face their toughest opponent yet.  The Hornets and Owls were very evenly matched in both skill and intensity.  The Country School’s strategy for the day was to play a defensive game with five defenders and hope to score a goal or two.  The game was a stalemate up to the halftime break, with the score 0-0.  The defensive play of Gabe ‘22, Oli ‘23, Jack ‘22, Luca ‘23 and Blake ‘22 was outstanding as they fended off several attacks from the Hamden Hall team.  Andrew ‘23 cleanly handled the few times the ball did threaten the goal.  Three minutes into the second half, the Owl’s struck and scored the opening goal.  Sam ‘22 dribbled down the left side of the field, made a quick give-and-go connection with James ‘22 and slotted the ball past the opposition keeper.  The game remained 1-0 for the next twenty minutes.  It was at that point that Harrison ‘22 made some nifty moves on the right side, found an opening, and his shot found the back of the net.  Hamden Hall made some strategic moves and ended up scoring a goal and making for some anxious moments at the end of the game.  The Owls held on to their one goal lead and celebrated an undefeated season when the final whistle blew.  This was an outstanding game from beginning to end, and it was a joy to be a part of it.

This game capped a phenomenal season.  Coach Birdsall and I have often spoken about what a wonderful group of young men that are a part of this team.  Those of us that have been a part of athletic teams understand what a special opportunity it is to be a member of an undefeated season.  I would like to first thank the players for their hard work, dedication, and great sportsmanship throughout the season.  I also would like to thank Coach Birdsall for bringing fresh energy, experience and knowledge to the soccer program.  Thank you also to Coach Behr, Mr. Fixx, and Mrs. McGrady for helping with the transportation to the away games.  And last but not least, a huge thank you to the parents for supporting TCS athletics and seeing the value in taking part in the school’s athletic program.  We loved seeing you all at the games!!!  Thank you for all being a part of this magical season!
