After 18 months of no cross country racing on campus because of Covid, standout eighth grader Anna V. led the girls‘ team to its seventh consecutive home Invitational win in a row, while setting a new course record and beating not only all the girls but all the boys. With perfect weather for running and viewing, the campus was humming with excitement and music as parents, grandparents, siblings and seven teams watched the boys’ race go off first. Moving from eighth place after the first loop of campus to fourth place overall at the finish, Luke S. had a breakout performance over the 3 km of trails, sidewalk and fields, crossing the line to nab the 12th best time ever for a month Country School boy. Rounding out the scoring top-five to assure the owls a strong second place behind only Foote School, Miklosh sprinted hard at the finish to take 10th place, followed by tenacious Keve, in 16th place, third brother Tash in 21st place, and the reliable Alex in 22nd. The top five runners in cross country score while the sixth and seventh runners bump opponents back from other teams. Kudos to Ryan, who took sixth for Country School, and Liam, who took valuable seventh for Country School. While the boys’ results were being tallied, the girls toed the line by Opening Hill Road and set off to circumnavigate the campus twice. Chasing Captain Anna, Tillie K. and Laila G. waged another impressive battle throughout the 1.86 miles, battling each other as great teammates and National Junior Olympic All-Americas, with Laila 12:49 time for second place and Tillie in 12:50 time for third place. Keeping a tenacious Foote opponent on her toes, Mirabel S. and Liv K. double teamed throughout the final circuit of the fields, with 3rd Grader Liv sprinting extra hard to outkick the Foote eighth grader, nabbing seventh place in a time of 14:16, with Marabel right behind in ninth place, in a time of 14:19. Stalwart Natalie Y. was the valuable sixth place displacer for The Country School, showing captain leadership by pulling teammate Maybe through as the important seventh runner and displacer. Going into the fall long weekend, some of the team run in the McGee invitational, this Saturday, in Berlin, Connecticut, and then Wednesday all race at the IDS Invitational.
