Preparing Children for the Path

by Beth Coyne, Assistant Head of School

The Middle School backpack is a phenomenon that has us all aching for a massage every time we see our students walking down the hall. My son actually pulled a muscle in his back years ago when wielding one of his heavy packs. So that students do not have to put the bag on his or her back, some families have opted to purchase backpacks with wheels. Although this can be a short-term help, it is not a long-term strategy. Have you ever seen a high school or college student with a wheeled backpack? Our teachers are mindful of their students' heavy load. In fact, more manageable in size than last year's, our Middle School students now have a new history textbook (selected for its content, not its size). Relying on a textbook in some Middle School classes provides our students with critical skills they will need in the coming academic years. Read more.

Visit Rome with TCS in March!

Information Session September 13 at 5:30 p.m.

As part of our TCS travel program, we are offering a week long trip to Rome and Pompeii in March of 2019, led by Jason Wainio and our World Language team. We are working in conjunction with Prométour to bring you an incredible trip, which will include the following:

  • Guided tours of the Roman Forum and Colosseum, including an interactive workshop at the Gladiator School of Rome
  • A hands-on workshop at the School of Mosaics
  • A day trip to visit the ruins of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • A visit to St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum
  • A cooking class where we will learn to make authentic pasta

While our travel is geared toward students, parents and families are welcome to join the tour as well. If you are interested, plan to attend an informational meeting in the library on September 13 at 5:30 p.m., immediately before the start of Back to School Night. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please reach out to Ann Marie Wei for more information.  We look forward to sharing the adventure with you!

Thank you, LaRosa Construction and Sullivan Paving

We are simply delighted with our new parking lot and sidewalks. If you're anticipating construction or paving at your own home, consider LaRosa and Sullivan.

PTA

PTA will have a table set up at tomorrow's picnic. Stop by, introduce yourself, and learn more about what we do at Country School.

Join us at our first meeting of the school year on Wednesday, September 12 at 8:15 in the Dining Hall. All are welcome!

Little Free Library

The supply of books in our little free library has greatly dwindled over the summer.

Please consider donating any gently used books on your shelves at home for others to enjoy. Simply stock the library as you walk by.

Thank you!

Junior and Adult Tennis Programs at the TCS Rothberg Tennis Center

Our goal for all levels in our Junior programs is to have fun, learn the fundamentals of the game and advance to the next level by working hard. All Junior programs are designed to work with the USTA Net Generation Format. The Net Generation format provides a unique opportunity for younger players to be introduced to the basics of the game. The court, rackets and nets have been resized for children who are learning the game. This makes learning more fun and easier for the player.
