- Middle School
by Jason Wainio, Basketball Coach
The Country School Owls have shown a lot of improvement over the course of this basketball season. From their understanding of the game to their ability to pass the ball around the floor, there has definitely been some great growth and progress from the first game of the year until the last.
The boys participated in the Pine Point Tournament at the end of January. They came right out of the gate to defeat IDS. Jay D. led the way by scoring six points in the shortened game. Erik H. added four points, and Philip W. chipped in with another three points. The next two games of the day came against the talented teams from Pine Point and St. John’s. Teddy M. led the scoring in the loss to Pine Point, scoring four points. Philip W. and Mason W. scored the only baskets against the eventual champion, St. John’s. In a rematch with Pine Point, Jay D. led the way in scoring, followed by Andrew Z., Philip W. and Erik H. In the final game of the day, the Owls dropped a one point loss to IDS. Andrew Z. had five points, while Erik H. scored four. Andrew was selected by the coaches as a member of the All-Tournament team.
The next week, the Owl’s picked up their third win of the season against Pine Point’s B team. Andrew Z. led the way with nine points. Philip W. had eight points and Erik H. chipped in six. Ian M., Mason W., and Mack B. each had four points. Chris C., Teddy M., and Aidan M. also made it into the box score. TCS then played IDS for the third time. The Owls lost by a score of 36-24. Philip W. had ten points, while Jay D. added eight points of his own. Jeb A. added four points. TCS then had a make up game with St. John’s. It did not start out well for the Owls, but they stormed back to make the score respectable with their best quarter of the year. Jay D. scored eleven points with nine of them coming in the fourth quarter. Jay hit several three pointers in the second half. Joe M. also had four points on the day.
The final game of the year was against Foote School. The Owls got off to their best start yet, behind ten first half points from Jeb A. The score was close going into half time, with the boys only down by six points. Foote went on a tremendous run in the third quarter and never looked back. Jay D. continued his strong scoring, leading the way with eleven points. Joe M. and Erik H. each contributed to the scoring as well.
Although their record does not reflect a banner season, the team did a tremendous job responding to adversity, playing with energy and enthusiasm, and working hard each practice to improve their skills and understanding of the game. Erik H., Pearse R., and Aidan M. demonstrated strong leadership as the elected captains of the team and 8th graders. i would also like to thank Andrew Z., Joe M., Ian M., Philip W., Jeb A., Chase C., Mack B., and Wendol W. They are also in this year’s graduating class and were a joy to coach over the past several years. I am looking forward to seeing Teddy M., Mason W., John R., Henry G., Christopher C., Luke P., and Jay D. rise into the leadership roles next year as they become the big men on campus! Thank you for being gentlemen on and off the court. Also, a huge thank you to the parents and fans for their support throughout the season.
