- Middle School
by John D. Fixx, Head of School and Cross Country Coach
Emerging with muddy shoes and memories to last a lifetime, The Country School cross country team competed Saturday in the Connecticut State Championships.
Racing at Wickham Park, in Manchester, runners in 5th through 8th Grade battled soggy, muddy, slow conditions to earn medals, cookies and hugs from their family.
In the first race of the day, 7th grader Tessa, 8th Grader Christina and 5th Grader Emma competed among 290 runners and tackled the 1.7 mile course with enthusiasm.
Then 8th Grader Captain Phil lead the boys team down to the muddy starting line and, after the starting pistol was fired, battled hard to finish 10th overall out of 300 runners. Very close behind, 5th Grader Sam finished 31st, 7th Grader John finished 38th, 5th Grader Miklosh finished 51st, 7th Grader Henry 53rd and 6th Grade soccer recruit Rich finished 86th, losing a shoe in a mud hole near the finish.
Our final race of the day had captain Margaux running in the large school A Race and, after starting boldly to put herself in position to contend for the lead, had to settle for finishing farther back than she would've liked.
Training now turns to the Junior Olympics, taking place this Sunday in Litchfield, Connecticut.
