A School Love Poem

by John D. Fixx, Head of School

In 1955, a school begins.

Audacious, it was.

13 students that September. They learned. They stretched.

Two buildings and a ballfield.

Then three buildings, four. Now seven. And a gazebo!

Forts in the woods, MacLane Poetry, gold and blue, learning and laughter.

Today: Teachers who care. Financial sacrifices, for 62 years, by parents.

Hugs, swings, technology, field trips and Field Day!

STEAM and Elmore Leadership. Public speaking.

Art, math, music, Science, English, PE,

Latin, Spanish, French, history, social studies, team time!

Reading buddies. Buddies. Reading.

Rocks all over. A lot of rocks. Sports. A lot of sports.

Jones, Robinson, DeFrancis, MacLane, Burt, Blatchford, Clark, the Farmhouse

Dress down days. Dress up days. Snow days!

Spelling and writing. Research and recess.

Be kind.

Playgrounds and the musical.

Camping, rafting, Hazen, Deer Lake, Moab and marshmallows.

Children laughing. Children laughing in the Children’s Garden.

First families: thank you!

Audacious it was. Audacious it is.

An education that lasts a lifetime.
