  • Welcome to The Country School! We are a coeducational, nonsectarian, independent school, founded in 1955 by a group of parents and educators dedicated to quality education and interested in providing an environment where children can develop their full potential. The program serves families with students in Preschool (age 3 years) through Grade 8, and is designed to educate curious, enthusiastic, and motivated learners. Our small classes allow close attention to the academic, social, and emotional growth and development of every student.

Our program is known for its ability to challenge students academically, and provides a safe community where each child is nurtured and encouraged each step of the way. As educators, it is our responsibility to engender and nurture enthusiasm, compassion, and self-confidence in each of our students. Students succeed at The Country School (TCS) because of their ability to thrive in a challenging environment, and their willingness to meet high standards of personal conduct and to wholeheartedly contribute their unique talents and gifts to the life of the school.

What sets us a part? In addition to the school's rich and rigorous curriculum and nurturing environment, a hallmark of TCS is its outstanding Outdoor Education Program, incorporated into the curriculum starting at age 3. The school's ideal location in a country setting allows for this seamless integration of school and nature. A butterfly garden, access to the Blue Trail hiking path, community classroom garden and greenhouse, climbing wall, and ropes course all within the boundaries of campus allow all students-from the youngest through the oldest-to experience the outdoors, impromptu learning exercises, and first-hand understanding of the nature around them each and every day. We complement these campus experiences with mission-based outdoor experiential learning away from campus-rock climbing, overnight camping trips, canoeing, biking, raft building, and so forth-that is sequential in physical challenges and skills presented. Students learn teamwork, will power, self-confidence, and cooperation-invaluable lifelong lessons that are difficult to convey with books and materials used within the four walls of a classroom!

The entire TCS experience-from the classroom to the outdoors-is a logical and exciting continuum of preparation in mind, body, and spirit, not just for the next academic level, but also for life in general. Working together as a family, we fulfill our mission of educating the whole child and empowering our students to reach their highest, not only in school but also in life.

Please visit us. Please examine our web site and contact us to learn more about what makes-and has made-TCS the choice for independent education for hundreds of families in Connecticut since 1955. We are here to answer your questions and share with you our special school community.

    Board of Trustees

A Board of Trustees governs The Country School and is charged with the strategic, long-term protection and strengthening of the financial, physical, and programmatic assets of the school. The Board's mission is to take the viability-related action to ensure programmatic excellence for the next generation of students.

Members to the Board of Trustees are elected at the Annual Meeting of the Corporation held each year in June and serve four-year terms.
