Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that's noncompetitive. Fostering cooperation and compassion—instead of opposition—is a great gift to give our children.
— From "Yoga for Kids" by Marsha Wenig in Yoga Journal
Ages: Grades 4 - 8
Course Offered: July 14 - 18, 9 - 11:30 a.m.
Instructor: Teresa Sullivan
Teresa Sullivan has taught English/Language Arts for 13 years, the past six of them at The Country School teaching Grades 5-8. For the past 10 years, Teresa has also been practicing yoga—from prenatal yoga to Bikram hot yoga to power vinyasa flow.
She is learning how to take her practice off the mat and apply it to her daily life, focusing on her breath, being more mindful, and practicing patience. She believes that if she can teach children the same principles of self-acceptance, meeting themselves where they are, being mindful, and being thankful, they can apply the lessons in their classrooms and on the playground.
Teresa graduated from Catholic University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and from Fairfield University with a Masters Degree in Secondary School English Education. She recently participated in a program at Breathing Room Yoga founded, owned, and operated by TCS almna Margo Broom, called Full of Joy Yoga - Kids' Yoga Teacher Training. Teresa runs The Country School's Yoga Club.
I am excited to offer yoga to our community because it is yet one more way The Country School seeks to educate the whole child. The program will blend crafts, storytelling, and games, all rooted in a foundation of yoga poses (asanas) that will increase flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. I hope to harness our children's exuberence and stir in them an enthusiasm for this new practice as an exciting, lifelong activity.
